Like surfing, kneeboarding, bodyboarding, etc., SUP (Stand Up paddle surfing or Stand Up paddle boarding) is governed by the ISA (International Surfing Association) at an international level. As a member of the ISA, Austrian Surfing (AS) is responsible for SUP in Austria. As a member of Austrian Surfing, ASF (Austrian Stand Up Paddle Federation) is responsible for organizing the Austrian national SUP championships as well as training SUP instructors.
SUP emerged from surfing: in the 1960s, the Waikiki beach boys were standing on SUPs and took photographs of tourists. During the surf boom, surf instructors used SUPs for a better vision in the water. In 2000, SUP made its way from Hawaii to California and reached Austria in 2009.
